32BJ SEIU ENDORSES NELLIE POU FOR NJ’S 9TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT
With support from the Union, Pou is poised to become the first Latina elected to Congress in NJ
Newark, NJ – 32BJ SEIU, the largest property services union in the country, announced its endorsement of Senator Nellie Pou in the race for the 9th Congressional District in New Jersey. Along with her years of passing legislation to advance social and economic justice reforms, the union highlighted the historic nature of Pou’s candidacy as she has the opportunity to become the first Latina elected to Congress in NJ.
“In a year where we hope to elect the first African American woman as President, we are proud to endorse Nellie Pou and help her become the first Latina to represent New Jersey in Congress. From passing juvenile justice reforms to helping undocumented immigrants get access to in-state tuition rates and financial aid assistance, Nellie has shown she cares about and fights for people who’ve often been forgotten about and left behind. Her work as a champion for workers, women, and healthcare affordability is exactly what we need in Congress and we’re proud to support her,” said Ana Maria Hill, 32BJ SEIU NJ State Director.
“I’m honored to have the support of 32BJ in my race for Congress . I’ve seen the organizing and advocacy they do on behalf of workers and I’m excited to continue to partner with them as a voice for workers in Congress,” said Senator Nellie Pou, Democratic Nominee for the 9th Congressional District in NJ.
When she began her service in 1997 as a member of the Assembly, she became the first woman and Latina elected to represent the 35th District. Since 2011, she has been representing the District as State Senator. She has served as a part of the Senate Leadership, as its Majority Caucus Chair and currently serves as Chair of the Senate Commerce Committee and the New Jersey Legislative Latino Caucus.
The endorsement comes after 32BJ SEIU conducted a comprehensive candidate screening process, which included the submission of written questionnaires as well as in-person interviews.
