ACHIEVERS EARLY COLLEGE PREP CELEBRATES NEW JERSEY STEM MONTH

[TRENTON], NJ– In celebration of New Jersey STEM Month, Achievers Early College Prep (Achievers) located in Trenton, NJ will participate in a STEM Showcase at NJ’s State House, on Monday, March 25, 2019. Achievers was one of two charter schools approved in 2018 by Governor Phil Murphy’s administration and the NJDOE. Students from Achievers have been working on technological design projects and science experiments over several weeks to prepare for the day’s event.

Throughout the year students have been working to find and cultivate interests in STEAM through the school’s STEAM Friday program. This program has afforded 6th graders the chance to engage in coding, basic robotics and lab experiments. NJ STEM Month provides the school an important platform along this continuum of year-round STEAM work.

The State House Showcase is one of many events held in support of NJ STEM Month. From 2015-2017, New Jersey hosted an annual New Jersey STEM Week to promote the state’s commitment to STEM excellence. Similarly to last year, Governor Murphy and Assemblyman Andrew Zwicker have again designated the entire month of March as New Jersey STEM Month. Last year, nearly 9,000 learners across New Jersey engaged in STEM Month activities.

“New Jersey STEM Month and NJ STEM Pathways Network showcase the diversity and reach of STEM education, workforce and innovation in this state.” said Kim Case, Executive Director of the Research & Development Council of New Jersey and Manager of the New Jersey STEM Pathways Network.

The month-long observance highlights the Garden State’s strong presence and accomplishments in STEM, including its industry, academic, government and non-profit sectors.

Efe Odeleye, Co-Director of Achievers expressed similar excitement for the event. “We want to make it possible for all our students to be eligible for competitive college and career disciplines in STEM and Digital Arts. Therefore, we focus on an early college framework utilizing project-based learning and a STEAM centered curriculum and is why this event is so relevant to our work and mission. Our students are excited to highlight their work at this year’s event!”
