Acting Governor Scutari Signs Proclamation Honoring MLK’s ‘I Have a Dream’ Speech

Trenton – Acting Governor Nick Scutari today signed a state proclamation honoring Dr. Marin Luther King’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech. Commemorating the 60th anniversary of one of the most significant speeches in history, the proclamation declares August 28th to September 1st “I Have a Dream Week” in New Jersey.

“Dr. King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ address at the Lincoln Memorial 60 years ago continues to be one of the most significant speeches in history,” said Acting Governor Scutari. “Its impact was both immediate and timeless. It helped propel enactment of the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act – two of the defining achievements of the civil rights movement – and continues to serve as an inspiration for civil and economic justice throughout the world.”

The resolution praises the many community and faith-based groups in New Jersey that are honoring Dr. King’s legacy with programs and events that commemorate his accomplishments and continue his example by encouraging people to engage in service to others. It highlights the continuing relevance of the speech as the culminating event of the “March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom” in 1963.

“Dr. King’s message is as relevant today as it was in his lifetime,” said Acting Governor Scutari. “It is a fitting tribute that people throughout America are honoring his legacy by engaging in activities that serve others. His dream may not be fully realized, but it is very much alive.”
