Advocates Applaud New York State Assembly Vote To Pass “GreenLight NY” Bill That Would Expand Access To Driver’s Licenses; Urge New Jersey Legislators To Take Immediate Action For Passage Of New Jersey’s Similar Bill

NEW JERSEY- June 13th, 2019– Advocates for expanding access to driver’s licenses in New Jersey released the following statement in response to last night’s New York State’s Assembly vote on the “GreenLight NY” bill’s passage out of the New York State Assembly.

“We congratulate the New York’s State Assembly with moving forward on expanding access to driver’s licenses with an overwhelming vote in favor of the bill that would provide access to driver’s licenses and thereby increase mobility for thousands of families and improving road safety for everyone in New York state. We call on legislators in New Jersey’s Assembly to follow suit on A-4743 and take action to pass the New Jersey bill before leaving for the Summer break on June 30th.

“This is a common-sense policy that would help more New Jerseyans access a driver’s license and improve road safety for all with more tested and trained drivers on the road. As Trenton focuses on passing the state’s budget for the next fiscal year, we urge legislators to consider the $90 million in revenue that is projected to be generated annually with expanded access to driver’s licenses once the proposal is fully implemented.

“Driving is a necessity in New Jersey, just as it is in many parts of New York state. As legislators in New York have taken action on improving mobility for residents in their state, we urge New Jersey legislators to do the same by prioritizing bills A-4743 and S-3229 which will benefit over 719,000 New Jersey residents.”
