AFP-NJ Condemns Latest New Jersey Corporate Welfare Scheme

TRENTON, NJ – Americans for Prosperity-New Jersey (AFP-NJ) today reacted to news that Governor Christie and legislative leadership plan to offer Amazon $5 billion in taxpayer financed subsidies to lure the company to New Jersey. The company recently announced it was looking to open a second headquarters in North America.

“This is just the latest example of Governor Christie and the state legislature’s repeated attempts to create economic growth through expensive and ineffective tax credits. These credits take hardworking tax dollars from everyday citizens and gives them to the wealthy and well-connected – a reverse robin hood of the worst kind,” said AFP-NJ Director Erica Jedynak. “Since taking office, Christie has pledged more than $8 billion in corporate welfare to politically-favored companies and non-profits, and Garden State residents have been treated to eleven credit downgrades. New Jersey is a fiscal mess, and fixing it requires fiscal discipline and fundamental reforms, not throwing money at one of the wealthiest companies in the world. We must work to level the playing field and giving all businesses the chance to succeed in New Jersey, not just those with political connections”
