AFSCME New Jersey Statewide Council Endorses Jersey City Mayor Steven M. Fulop for Re-election
JERSEY CITY — Yesterday, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) New Jersey Statewide Council officially endorsed Mayor Steven M. Fulop for Mayor of Jersey City for the upcoming municipal election to be held in November.
“I am incredibly thankful to the members of AFSCME for their support,” said Mayor Fulop. “Our administration and these hard working union members share the same values and act as partners in driving our community forward. Just as AFSCME is supportive, we look forward to championing their mission in Jersey City.”
The trades union is the largest public employees union in the nation, with 22,000 members in New Jersey, including 2,300 that reside in Jersey City.
“We endorsed Mayor Fulop because he fights for working people,” said Steve Tully, Area Field Services Director at AFSCME. “He understands and respects the value of the work that AFSCME members and all public employees do on behalf of the people of Jersey City. And, while Mayor Fulop has been a strong supporter of organized labor, he has also stood up for workers who don’t have a voice. He has fought for the working people of Jersey City these last four years by championing progressive causes like the $15 minimum wage and earned paid sick leave. His actions have helped improve the everyday lives of so many working men and women in Jersey City. Mayor Fulop has stood with AFSCME members and the working people of Jersey City, and we are proud to stand with him.”
The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) New Jersey Statewide Council provided a letter to Mayor Fulop stating their endorsement (attached).
“Despite relentless attacks on workers nationwide and in New Jersey, AFSCME members work hard everyday to strengthen and improve their communities. AFSCME members deserve elected officials who respect and champion their public service. Since [Mayor Steven Fulop] was elected in 2013, [he] has been that champion of working people by fighting for economic and social justice,” AFSCME NJ Organizing Committee Executive Director Randy Sharpe said in a letter to Mayor Fulop.”
