AFSCME Picks Salerno for South Jersey

Public Service Workers Union Rallies Behind Democratic Challenger

Cape May, New Jersey – October 21, 2024 –  The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) is backing Joe Salerno in the race for New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District. It represents 1.3 million public sector employees and retirees, including health care workers, corrections officers, sanitation workers, police officers, firefighters, and childcare providers.

“Joe recognizes the contributions that AFSCME members, and all public service workers provide for the people in South Jersey,” said AFSCME NJ Council 63 Director Steven M. Tully. “He has genuine respect for working people and he has been a supporter of organized labor in New Jersey. That’s why AFSCME New Jersey is proud to endorse Joe Salerno in the 2nd District.”

“My father worked in the VA his entire career, and my Mom was a secretary in the New Jersey public schools,” Salerno noted. “So I know what it means to be the glue that holds a community together and keeps it running. I sincerely thank the AFSCME for their support and for their work.”

Salerno’s policies for improving the lives and futures of working families has won him overwhelming union support in this election. In contrast, his opponent, incumbent Jeff Van Drew, earned a zero rating from the AFL-CIO. That may be part of the reason that polls and fundraising reports indicate the race is bending towards Salerno heading into their October 24th debate .
