NJDOL Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo, Senator M. Teresa Ruiz and Apprenti Co-Founder and Executive Director Jennifer Carlson Announce $3 million in grants for Registered Apprenticeship Programs in New Jersey
WHAT: The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (NJDOL) will host an event to commemorate the distribution of more than $3 million in grants to create more apprenticeship opportunities in the state through NJDOL’s Growing Apprenticeship in Non-Traditional Sectors (GAINS). The event will feature Labor Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo; Sen. M. Teresa Ruiz (D-29), who will highlight her agenda to diversify apprenticeships and create mentoring programs for women and minorities; and grant recipient, Apprenti™, the nation’s first registered tech apprenticeship program. Recent milestones in Registered Apprenticeship will also be announced.
WHO: NJDOL Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo, Sen. M. Teresa Ruiz, Apprenti™ Co-Founder and Executive Director Jennifer Carlson, Princeton University VP for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer Jay Dominick and President of NJII Dr. Donald H. Sebastian will offer remarks regarding the grant and the opportunities for the state, followed by a brief Q&A.

WHY: Twelve organizations will receive funding to support the hiring of 1,264 new apprentices making $15 an hour or more through NJDOL’s GAINS grant with partial assistance from the federal government. The aim of the GAINS grant program is to promote the creation and expansion of USDOL Registered Apprenticeship programs by providing companies 50 percent wage reimbursement and up to $8,000 for the first six months of a newly hired apprentice to offset training costs.
Apprenti™, the nation’s first registered tech apprenticeship program, will receive $215,400 through the NJDOL’s GAINS grant to train and place future tech workers in roles at Princeton University and other local and national employers operating in the state of New Jersey. Apprenti places emphasis on underrepresented groups including women, people of color and veterans
