Assembly State and Local Government Committee Advances Bill to Establish Statewide Legislative Internship Program

Bill A3541 aims to provide paid government experience for New Jersey college students

(TRENTON) — The Assembly State and Local Government Committee advanced legislation last week that would establish a statewide legislative internship program. Bill A3541, sponsored by Assemblywoman Tennille R. McCoy, would provide valuable work experience to New Jersey’s college students, preparing them for a career in government after graduation.

“This program would open the doors of public service to New Jersey students, giving them hands-on experience in the legislative process and a greater understanding of how laws get made,” said Assemblywoman McCoy (D-Mercer, Middlesex). “It’s a win-win for students and lawmakers, as it prepares the next generation of leaders while also supporting our district offices.”

Assemblywoman McCoy noted that this bill would ensure that all students, regardless of their financial situation, have an equal opportunity to gain valuable experience in public service.

Under the bill, the program would be open to undergraduate and graduate students attending accredited institutions, with priority given to New Jersey residents and students studying within the state. Interns would work in the district offices and would have the opportunity to extend their internship should both the legislator and the intern be interested in doing so. Each intern would receive a $1,000 stipend for each completed work period.

“Having the opportunity to be a legislative intern under Assemblywoman McCoy was an experience I will carry with me forever. I study political science at the university, and one of my primary concerns has been gaining enough experience to help me upon entering the workforce,” said Lourdes Hinsch, a former intern for Assemblywoman McCoy. “Through the internship, I had the chance to network with professionals in my field of interest and gain knowledge about the intricacies of legislation. I believe that internships serve as a valuable stepping stone to a desired career. They allow students to explore the different roles and industries within their field of interest and provide opportunities for resume enhancement.”
