Assemblyman Allen Champions Bill to Expand Medicaid Coverage for Fertility Preservation Services
Assemblyman John Allen announced today that legislation he is co-sponsoring to require New Jersey Medicaid and Plan First to cover fertility preservation services for patients for whom it is at risk as a result of medically necessary procedures has advanced out of the Assembly Financial Institutions and Insurance (AFI) Committee. The bill, A5000, passed the committee yesterday with Assemblyman Allen’s strong support.
This critical legislation addresses “iatrogenic infertility,” defined as “impaired fertility resulting from medical treatments such as surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or other procedures affecting reproductive organs or processes.” It ensures that individuals whose fertility is jeopardized by necessary medical interventions have access to fertility preservation options.
“Every New Jersey resident deserves the chance to build a family, regardless of necessary medical treatments that may impact their fertility,” said John Allen. “A5000 brings us a significant step closer to ensuring equitable access to fertility preservation services for those facing iatrogenic infertility. I am committed to working tirelessly to see this bill through to final passage and enactment.”
Companion legislation, S3831, sponsored by Senators Vitale and Gopal, is currently pending in the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee.
Elected to his first term in the Assembly in November 2023, John Allen represents Hoboken and parts of Jersey City.
