Assemblyman John Allen Co-Sponsors Two Common-Sense Gun Safety Measures
Assemblyman John Allen (D-32) today announced that he is co-sponsoring 2 common- sense gun safety measures, designed to prevent gun violence.
Assembly Bill 931 raises the age when one can purchase a rifle or shotgun from 18 to 21, aligning it with the minimum age in New Jersey for being able to legally purchase a handgun.
Assembly Bill 843 cuts by more than half the time-period before a renewal of firearms purchaser identification cards is required, lowering it from the current 10 years to 4 years. This means as specified in the proposed law that people who purchase and own guns in New Jersey will be required to complete courses in proper use and storage of firearms more frequently.
“While we are making progress, there were still nearly 924 people injured and 191 people killed by guns in New Jersey last year—and that is simply too many,” said Assemblyman John Allen. “Taken together, these two vital gun safety measures will help shield our residents from senseless gun violence, bringing us closer to having safer communities throughout our state. Gun violence is an epidemic in our country. I’m proud to co-sponsor these two bills in the Assembly, which if adopted, will strengthen our gun laws.”
“Unfortunately, New Jersey does not operate in a vacuum,” Allen continued, “but by our example of adopting an effective and common-sense framework for firearms, I’m hopeful we can encourage other states to do the same for their residents.”
“We, as leaders of the Hudson County Chapter of Moms Demand Action, are excited to seeAssemblyman John Allen sign on to support gun safety bills A931 and A843 as both represent common-sense legislation that will protect people from gun violence,” said Amy Faucher and Emily Jabbour. “Thank you for prioritizing gun safety as part of your work entering the Assembly, and we are excited to work with our fellow advocates from the Brady Campaign to support these proposed bills.”
President of the Brady NJ United Against Gun Violence Executive Committee Carole Stiller, and Executive Committee member Karen Kanter, added, “We are so pleased that Assemblyman Allen, is signed on to co-sponsor 2 gun violence prevention bills. Bill A931 raises the age to obtain a firearms purchaser identification card from 18 to 21 years old. A843 decreases from 10 to 4 years the renewal time for which a firearms identification card is valid. With these efforts, he is demonstrating that he cares about the safety of NJ citizens. Thank-you Assemblyman Allen!”
Elected to his first term in the Assembly in November, John Allen represents Hoboken and parts of Jersey City.
