Assemblywoman-Elect McCoy Wins Special Joint Mercer and Middlesex County Convention to Fill 14th Legislative District Vacancy
Hamilton, NJ – Mercer County Executive Dan Benson’s recent resignation from the 14th Legislative District prompted swift action from the Mercer County Democratic Committee (MCDC) and the Middlesex County Democratic Organization (MCDO). The two organizations jointly called for a Virtual Convention to ensure the 14th Legislative District maintains representation during the crucial Assembly voting session scheduled for January 8, 2024.
Effective December 31, 2023, Assemblyman Dan Benson stepped down from his role in the legislature, prompting the selection of an interim replacement to fulfill the duties until Assemblywoman-elect Tennille R. McCoy assumes office on January 9, 2024.
In adherence to all relevant New Jersey Statutes, as well as the Constitution and By-laws of both the MCDC and MCDO, the Virtual Convention took place on Saturday, January 6, 2024.
Assemblywoman-elect McCoy was nominated by Mercer County Executive Dan Benson and seconded by Senator Linda Greenstein, ultimately leading to an uncontested decision to fill the vacancy. McCoy, having received unanimous support from both the Mercer County Democratic Committee and the Middlesex County Democratic Organization, emerged as the chosen successor.
Speaker Craig Coughlin will administer the Oath of Office to Assemblywoman-elect McCoy on January 8, 2024, at the State House. This streamlined transition ensures that the 14th Legislative District remains well-represented during this pivotal period.
