Why: Did you know: Fraud costs senior citizens $2.9 billion annually according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office? These scammers not only take the hard earned money of their victims but their security and self-worth. This issue has personally affected every single person whether it be their parents, grandparents or themselves.
This type of crime is preventable through education. Why do scammers target seniors? According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, “Older Americans are less likely to report a fraud because they don’t know who to report it to, are too ashamed at having been scammed, or don’t know they have been scammed. Elderly victims may not report crimes, for example, because they are concerned that relatives may think the victims no longer have the mental capacity to take care of their own financial affairs.” It is imperative that we give seniors the tools to recognize, report, and defend themselves against scammers.
