Asw. Quijano Statement on NJ/NY Proposed Minimum Wage Increase for Airport Workers
(TRENTON) – I am thrilled to see Governor Phil Murphy and Governor Kathy Hochul announcing a proposal from the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey for annual minimum wage increases for airport workers in New Jersey and New York, an essential step in recognizing and respecting the contributions of these hardworking individuals. This initiative aligns with the shared goal of our two states, providing a fair, competitive wage, and continuing to build upon the past precedent we’ve set in enacting historic minimum wage legislation.
Ensuring livable wages for airport employees not only enhances job retention but strengthens our entire community and the quality of services on which millions of travelers depend and was a key proponent in my introduction of the “Healthy Terminals Act,” which was signed by Governor Murphy in 2021.
Prior to that, I marched for pay equity at Newark Liberty International Airport and listened to workers speak about the challenges they faced daily – balancing long hours and struggling to afford basic necessities, and worst of all, the feeling of being overlooked despite the essential work they do to keep our airports running. Airport workers are vital to our state’s infrastructure and because of that, I felt it was high time that their wages keep pace with the rising cost of living. The Port Authority last adopted an expanded minimum wage policy in 2018, and I am pleased to see this decision to provide workers with automatic wage increases starting early next year.
Throughout my career, I have championed fair wage legislation and advocated for policies that support our essential workers, and this proposal continues that legacy. Airport workers – many of whom were on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic – deserve wages that reflect their contributions. This commitment to fair wages and benefits not only improves lives but also creates a safer and more dedicated workforce to welcome travelers to New Jersey.
Yesterday’s announcement is instrumental in securing the vitality of airport workers, and I commend all parties involved for their tireless work in getting to this point. When we invest in our workforce, we build a stronger more resilient future for all. |
