Senator Joins Somerset County Food Bank in Effort to Aid Federal Workers Impacted by Shutdown Senator Kip Bateman (R-16) today announced that his district office will be hosting a food drive to help local food banks cope with a rise in demand, and meet the needs of furloughed federal government workers and all local residents currently struggling with hunger. (The Food Bank Network of Somerset County) Non-perishable food items and toiletries can be dropped off at Senator Bateman’s district office in Somerville through the end of February. Senator Kip Bateman’s 16th Legislative District Office: All donations will be transported to The Food Bank Network of Somerset County, which is currently serving as a hub for local collections. “For the past five weeks, federal employees have been struggling to make ends meet. They have no idea when they will get a paycheck again,” Bateman said. “These hardworking folks are not to blame for the shutdown, but they are paying the price every day. Many are now struggling to put food on the table and local food banks are really feeling the strain. “I am encouraging everyone who is able to please drop off donations at my office in Somerville. We have a responsibility to do everything we can to support our public servants and all people in need. Hosting this food drive is the least we can do.” Here’s a list of the most needed items:
“As Somerset County’s largest food bank, we are looking for donations that will adequately provide complete meals to all our neighbors, especially those being impacted by the federal government shut down,” Marie Scannell, Executive Director of the Food Bank Network of Somerset County, said. “We are thankful to Senator Bateman for hosting this drive to ensure no person or child goes hungry.” As of mid-January, more than 25,000 federal workers have filed for unemployment, according to a report by Politico. To compare, less than 2,000 federal employees filed for unemployment this time last year. “Helping our neighbors put food on the table is not about politics. The bottom line is people in our community are going hungry and they need our help,” Bateman added. “If you’re looking to assist federal workers during the government shutdown, or anyone who is coping with hunger, I hope you’ll take the time to drop off a donation.
