Beach, Thompson Resolution Recognizing Relations between NJ and Taiwan Advances From Senate
Trenton – A resolution sponsored by Senate State Government, Wagering, Tourism & Historic Preservation Committee Chair Senator James Beach and Senator Samuel D. Thompson, which would recognize the importance of strong relations between New Jersey and the Republic of China (Taiwan), advanced from the Senate today.
The resolution, SR-137, would commemorate the 40th anniversary of the “Taiwan Relations Act” and the 30th anniversary of the New Jersey-Taiwan sister state relationship. It would also reiterate the state’s support of a close economic and trade partnership between the United States and Taiwan.
“New Jersey and Taiwan have enjoyed a close and mutually beneficial relationship since entering into a sister state relationship in 1989,” said Senator James Beach (D-Burlington/Camden). “Several Taiwanese companies have come to call New Jersey their home, including Eva Air and AAEON Electronics Inc., which have created countless job opportunities for people in the state.
“New Jersey is also home to many Taiwanese immigrants and their descendants, who have found success and have greatly contributed to the growing diversity and economic development within the state. Celebrating this relationship with our sister state emphasizes our shared commitment to a free market economy, human rights and democracy.”
The United States Congress passed the “Taiwan Relations Act” (TRA) in 1979 to sustain a close relationship as well as advance mutual security and commercial interests between the United States and Taiwan.
The resolution was released from the Senate by an affirmative voice vote.
