| (Egg Harbor Township) Atlantic County Freeholder District 3 candidate Ashley Bennett released the following statement in response to reports that Atlantic County Freeholder John Carman routinely wears a Confederate flag patch on his clothing:
“As a woman of color, I had a deep, visceral reaction to the images I saw. I honestly could not even believe it. The Confederate flag is a symbol of hatred, intolerance, and bigotry. The fact that Freeholder Carman believes this is appropriate conduct for an elected official in New Jersey in the year 2017 is outrageous.
“Freeholder Carman’s display of the Confederate flag casts a negative shadow over all of South Jersey. The fact that he would show the northern region of New Jersey with our nation’s flag yet cover our region with this flag makes it seem like we South Jerseyans encourage hate, division and intolerance, which we don’t! We treat everyone with respect.”
