Benson Statement on NJ TRANSIT’s Five-Year Capital Plan

(TRENTON) – Assemblyman Daniel Benson (D-Mercer, Middlesex), chair of the Assembly Transportation and Independent Authorities Committee, released the following statement in response to the release for NJ TRANSIT’s 5-year capital plan:

“NJ TRANSIT has suffered from years of underfunding and disinvestment. Now more than ever, the agency is facing unprecedented challenges that will require comprehensive solutions. This new capital plan aims to repair some of the damage by planning and investing in NJ TRANSIT’s infrastructure and equipment to ensure its continued reliability, safety and sustainability. These investments will create new jobs across New Jersey and fuel our economic recovery in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. When riders are ready to return, we anticipate that these investments will help the system improve its reliability and customer experience.

“I’m pleased to see NJ TRANSIT placing an emphasis on customer service and energy efficiency in its plans to modernize rail and bus systems. With these reforms, trains and new zero-emission buses should be able to accommodate more riders and experience less delays.

“These are critical steps in the right direction that will help us reinvigorate NJ TRANSIT.”
