Better Choices for New Jersey Coalition Statement to Task Force Announcement to Examine the State Corporate Tax Breaks

Trenton– In response to Governor Murphy’s Executive order to form a commission to investigate the Economic Development Authority’s Tax Incentive Programs, Analilia Mejia of the Better Choices for New Jersey Coalition, which organized a letter to legislators signed by over 70 organizations across issue advocacy and constituencies, released the following statement:

“The people of New Jersey deserve a full accounting and investigation into these corporate tax incentive programs. We welcome the move by the Governor and urge legislators to seek as much information from all investigations prior to seeking to legislate further concerning economic incentive programs in New Jersey.

The failure to responsibly administer, what can only be described as a massive corporate welfare program is problematic on both levels. Every dollar foregone in potential revenue was a dollar missing from state coffers that could have been invested towards ours education, infrastructure, environment, and our future.

Clearly the Governor is taking this issue as seriously as we all should, a fact made evident by the caliber and stature of all the members of this critical task force.”
