Boys to Leaders Foundation Applauds Appointment of Andrés Acebo as Interim President of NJCU

Boys to Leaders Foundation prides itself in empowering, motivating, and inspiring our youth, particularly minority students. Access to higher education institutions such as New Jersey City University (NJCU) is the crucial link to ensuring that minorities and first-generation students can improve their quality of life.

Andrés Acebo was appointed as the new interim president of NJCU earlier this year, amid the institution’s financial emergency. Under the interim president’s leadership, NJCU’s budget deficit has been reduced by approximately fifty percent and his administration has unveiled a recovery and revitalization plan aimed at leading the school to fiscal recovery. It is evident that Mr. Acebo’s passion to help his community, along with the institution’s recovery and revitalization plan is effective, and we must continue to support NJCU’s mission to provide a diverse population with an excellent education.

NJCU’s strength is its diversity, proudly serving as the longest-standing minority serving institution (MSI) and Hispanic serving institution (HSI) in the state of New Jersey. The institution’s administration is committed to the improvement of the educational, intellectual, cultural, socioeconomic, and physical environment of the surrounding urban region and beyond. In that spirit, we must prioritize the importance of funding the University’s recovery and revitalization plan.

“As an organization committed to being a leadership pipeline for the next generation, it is imperative to support NJCU in order to continue serving underprivileged communities,” said Sara Peña, President and Founder of Boys to Leaders Foundation. “Mr. Acebo is a proud first-generation college graduate, who shares a similar story with the students he now serves. Andrés and I personally understand how significant it is for first-generation families to have access to affordable, quality education which allows them to break generational barriers and make meaningful contributions to society.”

The Boys to Leaders Foundation respectfully calls on our state leaders to prioritize and allocate state funding for NJCU, which would secure its long-standing and impactful presence in our communities. We wholeheartedly support Andrés Acebo because he represents our story.
