BREAKING: Cook Political Report Moves NJ-02 From Solid Republican to Toss-Up

Following Congressman LoBiondo’s announcement that he’ll be retiring after his current term, the Cook Political Report announced a monumental shift in New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District, moving the seat all the way from Solid Republicans to Toss Up.

“This huge ratings change demonstrates how strongly positioned Democrats are heading into 2018,” said DCCC Spokesman Evan Lukaske. “Congressman LoBiondo acknowledged that Speaker Ryan’s Republican Congress has failed to get anything done for working people and there’s no evidence that will chance. Democrats are confident we will have a strong challenger here who, together with an energized grassroots base, will have an excellent opportunity to flip this seat.”

In a blow to House Republicans, popular moderate GOP Rep. Frank LoBiondo (NJ-02) announced he will not seek another term in 2018, citing both term limits on his chairmanship of the House Aviation subcommittee and a “vocal and obstinate minority within both parties” that has “hijacked good legislation in pursuit of no legislation.” His decision moves his South Jersey seat all the way from Solid Republican to Toss Up.

 

[…] LoBiondo’s exit, coupled with Arizona GOP Rep. Martha McSally’s increasingly likely Senate run, means Democrats’ route to the majority is more plausible than it was a week ago. It could also further marginalize the remaining moderates in the House GOP.
