Bucco Bill to Discover Why Businesses Leave NJ Passes Committee

Legislation sponsored by Senator Anthony Bucco that would require the NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development (NJLWD) to conduct exit interviews with companies that close their doors or relocate to another state has passed the Senate Labor Committee.

“When companies in New Jersey close their doors, or move to a more business-friendly state, the effects of layoffs are felt Statewide,” Bucco said. “Our mom-and-pop businesses help millions of families put food on the table. That is why it is critical that we discover the real reasons why so many job creators are fleeing New Jersey. This data will help us implement policies that draw innovators to our state, instead of driving them away.”

Sen. Bucco’s bill, S-2356, aims to discover the tangible reasons why local companies are exiting the Garden State. More than 2,000 New Jersey jobs were placed at-risk this year, due to employers closing their stores or moving to a new state, according to a report by NJ Advance Media.

The at-risk businesses named in the report included Sears, Sam’s Club, and other influential companies. Sen. Anthony Bucco’s legislation, S-2356, would require the NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development to send out surveys to companies that close, or leave the state.

Survey questions would include:

  • Were any taxes or regulations a factor in the company’s departure?
  • What laws have the employer found problematic?
  • Has the company had any contact with State departments or agencies to address regulatory concerns?

“New Jersey business owners are forced to deal with far too many burdensome rules and regulations. We have become known as a state that is bad for business. That’s a problem,” Bucco added. “Hopefully, once our leaders have the data they need to acknowledge this reality, we can work together to cut red tape and pass pro-business laws that will actually grow our economy. I am grateful to see this legislation advance today, and I strongly urge my colleagues in both houses to support it.”
