Senator Anthony M. Bucco today led the New Jersey Disability Caucus’ hour-long roundtable discussion on the shortage of direct support professionals (DSPs) and its impact on the thousands of state residents who require assistance.

“The lack of DSPs is a crisis not only in our state but across the nation,” said Bucco (R-25). “The daily lives of New Jersey residents living with disabilities are impacted. Without visits from caring, trustworthy workers, many can struggle with even the simplest activities, and they are forced to do without one of their strongest advocates.”

The virtual meeting provided panelists the opportunity to brainstorm ideas for attracting new workers and helping retain experienced DSPs in a field where turnover is significant obstacle.

“Hopefully, we come up with some solutions that will help develop a sustainable workforce. This topic is long overdue,” said Bucco, kicking off the roundtable. “I’m glad we will have an opportunity to spend time listening to some of the experts. Working together, we can find a resolution to this crisis.”

Bucco, a co-chair of the bipartisan caucus, noted “the state has an obligation to make sure that those most vulnerable get the care they need and deserve.”

The Senator advocated for an increased emphasis on recruitment and training through county colleges, emphasizing the career opportunities for DSPs, and the potential of technology to increase efficiency and effectiveness, and improve the daily experience for both caregivers and clients.

“So many New Jersey residents depend on DSPs and the services they provide,” Bucco said. “This is too important not to do everything in our power to fill the job vacancies and ensure that no resident in need of assistance is left behind.”
