Legislation sponsored by Senator Anthony Bucco (R-Morris, Somerset) and Senator Joe Pennacchio (R-Essex, Morris, Passaic) to honor veterans who have made the ultimate sacrifice by requiring the “Killed in Action” flag to be flown alongside the state flag is now law after it was signed by Governor Chris Christie.

“This helps us honor the American lives lost to protect freedom over our country’s history,” Senator Bucco said. “Commemorating those sacrifices every day at government buildings is a fitting tribute for our nation’s heroes.”

The legislation, S-1497, designates the K.I.A. flag as an official state flag, and mandates that it be displayed alongside the New Jersey State Flag at the State House in Trenton, as well as the principal government building in every municipality and county seat in the state. The K.I.A. flag shows the silhouette of a helmet resting on top of an upright rifle next to a service member on a red field.

“Those who served and died in action have given so much for us, and we should never forget the sacrifice they made to our country,” Senator Pennacchio said. “Every time someone looks up and sees the K.I.A. flag next to the state flag, they will think about everything those heroes have done for us.”
