Cape May County Indivisible hosts “Save Our Mail! Save Our Vote!” Rally to Save the USPS and Stop GOP Voter Suppression

RIO GRANDE, NJ – Cape May County Indivisible hosted a “Save Our Mail! Save Our Vote!” Rally on August 21st at the Rio Grande Post Office. This was part of a statewide effort coordinated by Blue Wave NJ, with events happening in every county. This was organized in response to Trump’s attacks and defunding of the postal system – which is seen as a direct threat to the right to vote and the integrity of the election. In Rio Grande, approximately 50 community members lined the sidewalk in front of the Post Office on Route 47, holding signs and chanting “Save Our Mail! Save Our Vote!” The rally concluded with a call to action to directly support the USPS by purchasing stamps, and to call Members of Congress.

Cape May County Indivisible leaders speak out on why these rallies are important, and why it is critical to continue these actions: “Our rally and call to action is to ensure the continued vitality of this long standing institution. It is a critical conduit, particularly in this election year, of our exercise of democracy. This egregious act is further evidence that our country and our democracy is not a top priority under this administration.” – Melisha Anderson, Cape May County Indivisible organizer.

“An effective Postal Service will be a critical element of the 2020 election. This is another attack on the foundation of our democracy. We are all exhausted but we cannot afford to sit idly right now.” – Kaylin Lydia, Cape May County Indivisible organizer.

“Trump knows his days are numbered. Gutting the Postal Service is a shameful scheme to disenfranchise voters and say the election was ‘rigged’ when he loses in November.” – Shayla Woolfort, Cape May County Indivisible organizer.

“We know that Trump will do anything to stay in office. Our community has been fighting this administration for the past three years and we will not stop now with these voter suppression attempts!” – Shannon McDevitt, Cape May County organizer.

“The latest attempt of the Trump administration to suppress voters through removing vital aspects of the Post Office is a desperate plot by Trump to win an election that the people want him to lose. We see right through his tactics and will continue to rally, protest, and fight to save our democracy!” – Crystal Hutchinson, Cape May County Indivisible organizer.

“If you’ve been sitting on the sidelines, now is the time to get involved. Call your Members of Congress. Purchase stamps. Protest. Join your local activism group. Trump will try to protect his own power and privilege at all costs. He will even sabotage the USPS. So we must use our power – the power of the people – to fight back and stop him. The future of our democracy depends on us.” -Cassandra Gatelein, Cape May County Indivisible organizer.
