Centenary University Inducts Eight Students into Social Work Honor Society

Phi Alpha, an internationally-recognized organization, promotes humanitarian goals and ideals in the field of social work.

Hackettstown, N.J., May 31, 2019 – Centenary University recently inducted eight social work majors into its chapter of Phi Alpha Sigma Rho, the world’s largest internationally-recognized honor society. The inductees all demonstrated academic excellence, maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.5. Founded in 1960, Phi Alpha promotes humanitarian goals and ideals in the field of social work and emphasizes high educational standards, research, and leadership. Today, the organization includes more than 450 chapters.

Centenary University offers a leading Bachelor of Science in Social Work degree that is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. The program offers students opportunities to engage in social work practice through fieldwork experiences in the community, in a variety of settings, and attend national social work conferences at venues such as the United Nations.

“This is a talented group of students who are prepared to make a difference in the world,” said Tara Veerman, Ph.D., associate professor of social work and sociology. “Phi Alpha connects its members with an extensive network of professionals in the field.
