Chiaravalloti Bill to Prevent Improper Use of ‘Nurse’ Title Clears Assembly Panel

(TRENTON) – Legislation (A-879) sponsored by Assemblyman Nick Chiaravalloti (D-Hudson) to prohibit a person to use a “nurse” title unless they are licensed as a professional, practical or advanced practice nurse was approved Monday by the Assembly Regulated Professions Committee.

Chiaravalloti released the following statement:

“Under current law, it’s a crime for a person without a nursing license to present themselves a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse, or use the R.N. or L.P.N. abbreviation. However, there are no laws against using the title “nurse” without a license.

            “This bill would correct that, and impose a $200 to $500 fine for violations upon conviction. Out of respect for the hardworking, dedicated professional nurses across New Jersey, they should be the only ones allowed to use the title they’ve more than earned.”
