CIANJ Statement on the Gas Tax Increase

“The Commerce and Industry Association of New Jersey (CIANJ) calls on the Legislature to immediately introduce an amendment to the motor fuels tax law to provide relief from the mandated tax increases that occur when the $2 billion annual revenue threshold is not met,” said Anthony Russo, CIANJ President. “New Jersey will likely be faced with an automatic annual increase in the gas tax as vehicles become more fuel efficient and many businesses continue to allow their employees to work from home.”

“While CIANJ supports the improvements and critical repairs to our infrastructure this tax pays for, we must also acknowledge the current economic crisis in New Jersey — businesses and residents cannot afford additional taxes.” Russo said. “Increasing any fees or taxes should be done through a deliberative process where needs are identified and prioritized and a funding source is sought while not placing New Jersey at a disadvantage.”

CIANJ President Anthony Russo is available for interviews on the gas tax increase – please contact Tracy Schoenberg, Director of Communications for CIANJ, at 201-694-2853 to schedule an interview.
