CITY OF NEWARK TO HONOR AMIRI BARAKA FOR NATIONAL POETRY MONTH

ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26, AT 6 P.M., IN CITY HALL FIRST FLOOR ROTUNDA

“An Evening of Poetry” will see award-winning poets read their work;

Musical performances and artistic displays also on tap

 

Newark, NJ—October 25, 2017—The City of Newark and Mayor’s Office of Arts, Cultural Development, and Tourism Executive Director Gwen Moten will honor National Poetry Month with “An Evening of Poetry” in honor of legendary Newark author, poet, and activist Amiri Baraka, on Thursday, October 26, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., in the City Hall First Floor Rotunda. City Hall is located at 920 Broad Street.

 

Award-winning poets will read their work at the event, honoring Mr. Baraka in the month of his birth. There will also be musical performances and artistic displays

 

“October Is Poetry Month: Read, Write, Recite” is an initiative under Mayor Ras J. Baraka and the Office of Arts, Cultural Development and Tourism to foster the art of poetry expression for all ages throughout the city of Newark. This cultural initiative is designed to use the art of poetry in advancing public speaking and delivery, while helping to develop performance, writing and critical thinking skills and self-confidence.
