CITY OF PATERSON CHOSEN FOR COMMUNITY-BASED YOUTH SUBSTANCE USE PREVENTION AND MENTAL HEALTH PROJECT

 

Mayor Andre Sayegh will announce that the City of Paterson has been chosen for a community-based youth substance use prevention and mental health five year project. The project which will be conducted by principal investigator, Dr. Ijeoma Opara, professor at Stony Brook University School of Social Welfare, will survey urban youth ages 13 – 21. This project will focus on elements of depression, anxiety, and social isolation – mental health conditions which have become greater since the start of the COVID pandemic.

 

Dr. Opara has been awarded a $1.84M National Institutes of Health High-risk, High reward research grant and is the first social worker to receive this highly competitive grant.
