Clarke and Torres Receive Climate Cabinet Endorsement in District 25
Jefferson Township, NJ – Christine Clarke and Dr. Jonathan Torres of Team LD25 were endorsed by Climate Cabinet Action. Clarke and Torres are running on the Democratic ticket in a tightly-contested race in New Jersey, in a district that now has just a 1% voter registration difference between the two major political parties. This endorsement speaks to the immediate impact their team’s election would have in the fight against climate impacts in New Jersey.
“With extreme heat and poor air quality due to climate-change induced forest fires, now – not later – is the time to elect leaders who will fight climate change. But, it’ll take local action to get it done. This is why Climate Cabinet is endorsing Christine Clarke and Jonathan Torres’s campaigns, because they will pass climate policy the moment they take office,” said Courtney Otto, Political Director for Climate Cabinet Action. “It’s simple: Christine and Jonathan have plans to create a better future for New Jersey. Our country needs these climate champions elected to office, because it’s past time politicians set aside the special interests and pass climate policy that will create clean energy jobs and reduce pollution rates across the country – especially in the Garden State. Christine Clarke and Jonathan Torres are the climate champions who will get the job done.”
“Global warming is no longer a future issue, it’s having impacts on our state and district now. With New Jersey being ground zero on climate impacts, warming and sea level rise, we’ve all seen demonstrations of what could happen if we ignore the facts and let politics-as-usual delay action or increase our emissions,” said Clarke. “It is an honor to receive Climate Cabinet’s endorsement because time is short and we need people who will take on polluters to put our families, and futures, first. I will fight to protect our towns, our properties, our schools, our businesses, places of worship, and the people we love from the worst impact projections.”
“In New Jersey’s District 25, climate change is hard to ignore. From the Canadian Wildfires choking out our skies to the frequent flooding we’re experiencing in our roads and lakes, we see it everywhere and now is the time for action,” said Torres. “It is an honor to be endorsed by the Climate Cabinet. With the consequences of climate change becoming a regular occurrence, it is vital that we take action to protect our families, our communities, and our state from escalating weather events.“
Down-ballot elections – including state legislative and municipal elections – are too often under-funded and overlooked by the average voter. However, state and local offices have tremendous impact on the success or failure of efforts to meet climate goals. Climate Cabinet targets state and local elections that would have the greatest “return on investment” in the fight against climate change and helps those candidates win at the ballot box. The candidates are looking forward to working together in the lead up to the general election on Tuesday, November 7, 2023.
