Commissioners begin $1 million bridge rehabilitation project in Berlin Borough

(Lindenwold, NJ) – Camden County Department of Public Works has begun a $1 million rehabilitation project of the Haddon Avenue Bridge over the NJ Transit line. The work is necessary to repair structural deficiencies of the bridge and is expected to be completed by Memorial Day. During this time, the bridge will be closed in both directions and a detour will be in place.

Work on the bridge includes installing temporary shielding to prevent debris from falling onto the track as needed and removing joints and adjacent concrete, installing elastomeric joints and strip seal expansion joints, reconstructing deck concrete, patching concrete deck and reconstructing the concrete curb.

The bridge will close to all traffic on April 18 and remain closed until the completion of the project. In addition, construction timelines are subject to change based on weather conditions and other variables.

“This is a major piece of county infrastructure and repairing it is critical,” said Commissioner Al Dyer, liaison to the Department of Public Works. “As with any road project we ask residents to be patient as there will be some disruptions over the course of the work, but crews will work hard to get this project completed as quickly and efficiently as possible by summer.”

The Camden County Department of Public Works is responsible for maintaining over 1,200 miles of county roadway and 50 bridges.  They are dedicated to making our area safer for motorists and pedestrians through county highway construction projects and road maintenance, including pothole repairs, street sweeping, grass cutting and storm drainage upkeep. The Public Works Department is located in Lindenwold where personnel are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to serve the residents of Camden County.
