Congressman Albio Sires’ Statement About Meeting with Venezuelan First Lady

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Congressman Sires released the following statement regarding his meeting with Venezuelan First Lady Fabiana Rosales:

“First Lady of Venezuela Fabiana Rosales, wife of interim President Juan Guaidó, is visiting the United

States to help inform us on the situation on the ground in Venezuela for President Guaidó, other members of the opposition, and the Venezuelan people. The Maduro regime has been cracking down on any and all opposition since taking power and is now doing so with more impunity. This is evident in the capture and release of journalists and the kidnapping of President Guaidó’s chief of staff, Roberto Marrero. These arbitrary detentions are just one example of the many human rights abuses the Maduro regime has imposed on Venezuelans. I have expressed my support for a democratic transition led by Guaidó and for free, fair, and transparent elections that ensure true democracy for the Venezuelan people. I welcome the First Lady and Roberto Marrero’s family to our country and thank them for their tireless fight for democracy.”
