Budget vote set to remove state and local tax deductions raising taxes for more than half of New Jersey’s 11th District

In anticipation of the House of Representatives vote on the Senate-approved Budget bill, Democratic candidate for New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District Mikie Sherrill released the following statement:

“The passage of the GOP budget will devastate New Jersey’s families. At stake are the state and local tax deductions that New Jerseyans depend on to offset the high tax rates they already pay. The people of NJ-11 face thousands of dollars in tax increases that will hit our district harder than anywhere else in the country. And yet, Congressman Frelinghuysen still refuses to join his fellow New Jersey Republicans and commit to voting against this bill. His silence is deafening as he continues to put party over his constituents.

This bill is the first step in the Republican tax plan which will hike taxes on middle-class families to pay for tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. New Jersey’s families and small businesses should not be left holding the bag. We simply cannot afford it, and our district deserves a representative in Congress who recognizes that.”

According to the Americans Against Double Taxation, NJ’s 11th district has the second highest percentage of people in the United States who benefit from the state and local tax deduction and will be subject to increases almost four times greater than the next hardest hit district in New Jersey. Even fellow New Jersey Republicans like Leonard Lance admit the average New Jersey taxpayer will see their tax burden skyrocket by $3,500 without the deductions. Congressman Frelinghuysen continues to be the only member of the New Jersey delegation who has voted with the Trump Administration 96 percent of the time.
