Congressman Gottheimer Announces Fifth District’s Service Academy Nomination Selection Committee
GLEN ROCK, N.J. – Today, Congressman Josh Gottheimer announced the Service Academy Nomination Selection Committee of New Jersey’s Fifth Congressional District. The eleven men and women represent veterans of the United States Armed Forces, alumni from the service academies and have more than 50 years of combined service in their branches. The eleven members of the committee will evaluate applicants for the five United States Service Academies and make recommendations to Congressman Gottheimer.
“Pursuing an appointment to a military academy demonstrates a deep commitment to service and patriotism,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-05). “I am honored to have these eleven extraordinary Jersey residents on my Academy Selection Committee representing towns from across the Fifth District and bringing strong military backgrounds to the table. Their experience and wisdom will help determine the strongest candidates to represent North Jersey at our five Service Academies. I applaud their continued service.”
November 15, 2017 is the deadline for all applications to the United States Military, Naval, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine Academies for the Fifth District.

Howard Burrell
Burrell served as a Major in the United States Air Force and is a former Sussex County Freeholder.
Katie E. Cataldo
Cataldo joined the New Jersey Army National Guard in 1999 and currently serves as a Staff Sergeant. She has a B.S in psychology from Monmouth University and is currently employed with the Division of Child Protection and Permanency as an adoption worker.
Mayor Kevin Clancy
Mayor Clancy served in the Unites States Navy from 1965-1969 as a Petty Officer 2nd Class. He also served as a District Commander for the Veterans of Foreign Wars from 2016-2017. He is also a former Mayor of Bergenfield.
Tony Gallopo
Gallopo served as a Seaman in the United States Navy and is a former New Jersey Department of the American Legion Vice Commander. He is also retired from the New Jersey Department of Corrections.
Mayor John Glidden
Mayor Glidden is a graduate of Union College and served as a Major in the Vietnam War as a USAF C-130 Command Pilot. Mr. Glidden served as a Councilman in Closter from 2004 to 2014. In January 2015, he was elected Mayor of Closter.
John Grisoni
Grisoni is a West Point Graduate class of 1961. He served in the Unites States Air Force for five years, reaching the rank of Captain, and currently serves as an admissions representative for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
Assemblyman Gordon Johnson
Assemblyman Johnson is a retired Army Reserve Major and served during Operation Desert Storm. He is a former Bergen County Sheriff and currently represents the 37th Legislative District of New Jersey.
Major Steven Kalish
Kalish graduated from the U.S Military Academy at West Point in 1961. He served five years on active duty in the U.S. Army and 14 years in the Army Reserve, and achieved the rank of Major.
John Oroho
Oroho received a J.D. from the University of Notre Dame School of Law in 1985 and a B.S. from the United States Merchant Marine Academy, where he graduated with honors in 1978, and reached the rank of Lieutenant.
James A. Roth
Roth hails from West Milford and served as a Specialist in Vietnam veteran. James earned a B.S. in business while using education benefits he earned from his military service.
Mayor Harry Shortway
Mayor Shortway joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1955, where he was a Private First Class machine gunner. He also served as a police officer in Ridgewood for 42 years, retiring as a detective sergeant, and is credited for making 3,000 arrests. Harry is currently serving as the Mayor of Midland Park.
