Congressman Kim Holds Telephone Town Hall
on Issues Impacting the Black Community

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Andy Kim (NJ-03) was joined by Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08), a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and the chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, for a telephone town hall on issues impacting the Black community, including policing reform and the economic impact of the Coronavirus crisis. This was the Congressman’s 22^nd town hall since January of 2019.

“A lot of the questions we’ve heard here today reflect what I’m hearing in our community; the need to move this issue forward and get something done,” said Congressman Kim. “We’re seeing people in communities across Burlington and Ocean County coming together and speaking up to address issues of inequality that impact the Black community. Our goal isn’t just to pass a bill through Congress – that’s a means not an end – our goal is to emphatically show that Black Lives Matter and we’re going to keep working to bend the arc of history towards justice.”

Congressman Kim and Congressman Jeffries answered questions about the next steps in Congress for the Justice in Policing Act, the impact qualified immunity would have on policing reform, and efforts to assist Black-owned businesses seize federal opportunities for contracts.

Congressman Kim co-sponsored and voted to pass the Justice in Policing Act, which would provide critical reforms that address ongoing issues impacting law enforcement and communities of color with the aim of greater public safety. In the past weeks, Congressman Kim has joined peaceful demonstrations calling for justice for George Floyd, has held a virtual forum on discrimination and bias, and has met with Black community and youth leaders to hear their concerns and discuss solutions on police reform and other critical issues.

Congressman Kim is a member of the bipartisan House Select Committee on the Coronavirus Crisis, where he serves as one of twelve members of the House tasked with conducting oversight over programs aimed at ending the Coronavirus pandemic and helping address the economic impact it’s having on the American people.
