Congressman Kim Introduces Bill to
Name Post Office After Clara Barton

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Andy Kim (NJ-03) announced the introduction of H.R. 4988, which would name the U.S. post office in Bordentown, NJ after Clara Barton, the founder of the American Red Cross.

“Clara Barton isn’t just a trailblazer on humanitarian and education issues, she’s a role model worthy of recognition,” said Congressman Kim. “Commemorating her incredible accomplishments and lasting impact on our communities will help ensure her contributions live on for future generations.”

In addition to her leadership role in founding the American Red Cross, Barton also helped found the first free school in New Jersey, located in Bordentown. Barton’s efforts helped increase the number of children in school from six when the school was first established, to over 600 by the next year.

“I would like to thank and support Congressman Kim’s efforts to officially name our historic local United States post office after Clara Barton, someone who has contributed so much to our Country with the introduction of the first public school as well as founding the American Red Cross,” said James Lynch, Mayor of Bordentown, NJ. “Her historical value to Bordentown and our state and country is unprecedented.”

“Our founder, Clara Barton, is renowned for her humanitarian work,” said Rosie Taravella, CEO, American Red Cross New Jersey Region. “Recognizing this, along with the impact of Clara’s role as a teacher here in New Jersey and champion of making free education available to all, can be an inspiration for compassion and voluntary service for years to come.”
