Congressman MacArthur Introduces Bill to Reauthorize the National Flood Insurance Program

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Tom MacArthur, whose district was devastated by Superstorm Sandy, took action to keep the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) from expiring.

With NFIP set to expire on July 31^st, the House of Representatives passed a five-year reauthorization on Nov 14, 2017. This bill included numerous provisions authored by MacArthur to limit premium increases, increase mitigation coverage and require more accountability at FEMA. Unfortunately the Senate has failed to act.

Today, Congressman MacArthur introduced National Flood Insurance Program Extension Act to keep NFIP authorized through hurricane season. House Majority Whip Steve Scalise signed on as an original cosponsor to this bill.

“I have met numerous times with House Leadership and explained the critical need for NFIP to be reauthorized. This bill extends NFIP through November 30^th, allowing over 140 million Americans living in coastal communities, like Ocean County, to be covered through the entire hurricane season,” Congressman MacArthur said. “I am calling on my colleagues on both sides of the aisle – and from both chambers of Congress – to come together and pass this bill to ensure that families and communities are not put at risk.

I will continue to work with House and Senate Leadership on a long-term reauthorization that gives home-owners certainty, ensures affordability, increases mitigation funds for shore communities, and instills accountability at FEMA for how they treat disaster victims.”
