Congressman Rob Menendez Joins Congressional Delegation to Visit NYC Processing Facilities for Asylum-Seekers

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Friday, Congressman Rob Menendez was part of a Congressional Delegation (CODEL) led by Congressman Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14) to New York City to visit facilities that provide processing for migrant families who recently arrived in the city and the surrounding areas, and to meet with New York City Mayor Eric Adams and representatives of his administration, as well as non-profit service partners.

“Joining my colleagues in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to visit New York City’s migrant processing facilities further affirmed my strong belief that we must fix our broken immigration system with real solutions that address the root causes of our challenges,” said Congressman Menendez. “Congress and the Biden Administration must work together to ensure that New York City and the surrounding areas have the federal support they need to assist with recently arrived migrants, including federal funding, expedited work permits, and the redesignation of TPS for certain vulnerable populations. At the same time, we must and always will work towards finally providing a solution that creates comprehensive immigration reform and ensures that we live up to our American ideals.”

Congressman Menendez and the delegation visited the Roosevelt Hotel, which is being used to process, house, and provide social services to recently arrived asylum-seekers.

Additionally, the delegation visited a Red Cross application center for asylum-seekers, where migrants are assisted with their applications for asylum, while providing relief to nonprofit legal services agencies that have come under resource strain. As a Member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, Congressman Menendez has often stood up against House GOP attempts to reduce federal funding for these agencies that provide critical support to migrant families.

The delegation also met with New York City Mayor Eric Adams, key officials from his administration tasked with the city’s assistance with migrant arrivals, and migrant services providers including Catholic Charities.

The Congressional Delegation included:

Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13)

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14)

Rep. Jerrold Nadler (NY-12)

Rep. Nydia M. Velazquez (NY-07)

Rep. Tony Cárdenas (CA-29)

Rep. Veronica Escobar (TX-16)

Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04)

Rep. Sylvia Garcia (TX-29)

Rep. Jimmy Gomez (CA-34)
