Congressman Sires Issues Statement on Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine and U.S. Response

(Washington, DC) – Congressman Albio Sires (D-NJ) issued the following statement regarding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the preliminary U.S. response to this flouting of international law:

“Putin has once again shown a blatant disregard for the sovereignty of Russia’s neighbors. This attack is a premeditated act of war that threatens global stability, human rights, and the foundations of democracy in the region. As the world watched in horror, Putin’s orders led directly to the loss of innocent life in his seemingly endless quest for power. We are witnessing the continuation of the invasion of Crimea which resulted in Russia being removed from the Group of Eight (G-8) in 2014. We must go further to make sure Putin and his lackeys understand that we will not stand idly by while they threaten international law and democracy. Today President Biden announced an initial wave of consequences for Putin’s war on Ukraine, including restrictions on banks, industries, and individuals to restrict Russia’s access to U.S. capital. I support the President, and our allies, as we respond to with a firm hand and will continue supporting Ukraine against this threat to their soveignty.”
