Congressman Sires Statement on the Supreme Court’s Ruling on the Remain in Mexico Policy

(Washington, D.C.) – Congressman Sires released the following statement following the Supreme Court’s decision on Biden v. Texas, which rules in favor of the Biden administration in rescinding the Remain in Mexico policy. The Remain in Mexico policy had forced asylum seekers from a third country who passed through Mexico to remain in Mexico as they await the adjudication of their asylum case in an enormously backlogged asylum system.

“The Supreme Court ruled in the Biden administration’s favor to finally dismantle the cruel Remain in Mexico policy, which has forced migrants to stay in cramped, unsafe conditions while waiting for their case to be heard across the border. This is a step forward, but there are many more steps we need to take to have a just, humane, and orderly immigration system which respects international asylum law, the U.S.’s historical role of being a land of immigrants, and the humanity of migrants. I will continue to fight for comprehensive reforms which accomplish these aims.”
