Congressman Van Drew Secures Commitment from HUD Secretary Nominee for Atlantic City Visit and Federal Intervention

Washington, DC –Today, Congressman Van Drew released the following statement after speaking with Scott Turner, the nominee for Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), about the dangerous living conditions at Stanley Holmes Village in Atlantic City.

“Secretary Turner and I had an in-depth conversation, and it is clear he is just as concerned as I am about what is happening in Atlantic City,” said Congressman Van Drew. “The conditions in Stanley Holmes Village, run by the Atlantic City Housing Authority (ACHA), just keep getting worse. Just recently, a resident was forced to leave her home while work was being done on underground pipes, and she was not allowed to take her pets with her. When she came back in the morning, her three-year-old bulldog had died. This heartbreaking incident is a direct result of the ACHA’s negligence, and it is unacceptable.

“I spoke to Secretary Turner about this, and he agreed these problems need to be addressed. He is committed to coming here, touring the facilities, and seeing the situation for himself. I look forward to working with Secretary Turner in his new role and I will keep pushing to make sure the residents of Stanley Holmes Village get the help they need. The people of South Jersey deserve safe and decent housing.”
