Congresswoman Sherrill Statement on President’s 2020 Budget Proposal

Welcome initiatives include increased funding for veterans, early childhood initiatives but cuts to programs for working families and infrastructure would harm our economy

Washington, DC – Today the President provided his FY 2020 budget to Congress. Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) applauded important bipartisan initiatives but warned of the harm that proposed deep cuts to early childhood care for working families and transportation infrastructure will have on New Jersey’s families and the economy.

“I support fully funding VA medical care, and believe the additional $7 billion proposed is urgently needed to increase veterans access to quality medical care and support veterans’ families. I also welcome the long-overdue recognition that investments in child care increase educational outcomes for our children and enable greater workforce participation. While I will work to help secure funding for these common sense priorities and a strong national defense, it is simply not credible to put forward a budget that slashes $33 billion over the next decade for working families and the neediest amongst us.

“Noticeably absent from the president’s budget is a serious proposal to address our failing transportation infrastructure, particularly the Gateway Tunnel project. Transportation infrastructure investments are an urgent national priority to grow our economy, and slashing the Department of Transportation’s budget by more than 20 percent is a step backwards, not forwards, for commuters in New Jersey and across the country.”
