Corrado Measure Creating Veterans Assistance Grant Program Advances

Senator Kristin Corrado’s legislation that would empower and support New Jersey veterans by establishing a Veterans Assistance Grant Program has unanimously advanced in the Senate Military and Veterans’ Affairs committee.

“Whether providing critical behavioral health services, or offering job training and employment assistance, New Jersey’s non-profits are crucial to advocating for and strengthening the needs of veterans across our state,” said Corrado (R-40). “The Veterans Assistance Grant Program will boost the support from local non-profits available to our veterans on a daily basis.”

Corrado’s bill, S-170, would create the “Veterans Assistance Grant Program” within the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans’ Affairs (DMAVA). The program would offer grants to qualified nonprofits which provide mental health, family counseling, job training and employment services, and housing assistance to veterans.

“Additional grant funding will better help our brave veterans who have fallen on tough times,” added Corrado. “I am committed to ensuring veterans and their families have the support and care they need when the return home to the Garden State.”

Data suggests that the transition from the military to civilian life can take a toll on the mental health and well-being of veterans, which may lead to struggles with employment and housing insecurity.
