Corrado Measure to Establish College Mental Health Services Grant Program Advances

Senator Kristin Corrado’s legislation to improve access to mental health services on college campuses has been advanced by the Senate Higher Education Committee.

“Now more than ever, we need to empower New Jersey’s colleges and universities with the tools to protect the mental health and well-being of every student,” said Corrado (R-40). “The demand and necessity for mental health services and support for students on college campuses have increased significantly in recent years. Whether it’s stress due to a big exam, dealing with family issues at home, or anxiety over the job hunt due to the pandemic, boosting mental healthcare services will help students continue their education while working through their struggles.”

Corrado’s legislation, S-1070, would establish the “College Mental Health Services Grant Program.” This program would allocate grants to New Jersey universities and county colleges to establish or improve access to mental health services on campus.

Corrado introduced this bill in response to the numerous suicides and lack of transparency surrounding these afflictions at Rowan University in Fall 2019. It was reported that the wait times at Rowan for an appointment with a mental health professional could take months.

“After the tragedies we witnessed last year at Rowan, it’s clear that more needs to be done to address this growing mental health concerns,” added Corrado. “This program will be welcomed by many students who want to be assured that the services they need will be provided.”
