Cory Booker Weekly COVID-19 Readout
Week of April 6, 2020:
- Our office published a comprehensive COVID-19 resource guide for New Jerseyans, detailing a wide range of federal relief available. Since its release on Monday, the guide has been downloaded over 10,000 times.
- Senator Booker joined Governor Murphy for a visit to the Regional Operations Intelligence Center (ROIC), which is being used as a command center for the state’s COVID response during the crisis. While at the ROIC he joined Governor Murphy for a COVID video call with Vice President Pence, Dr. Debbie Birx, White House officials, and other governors, and later spoke at New Jersey’s daily COVID briefing.
- On Wednesday, Senator Booker joined Governor Murphy for a tour of the Edison Field Hospital, a federal medical station set up by FEMA to treat “non-covid” patients from regional hospitals in order to boost capacity.
- Senator Booker hosted a webinar in partnership with the New Jersey Center for Nonprofits, joined by more than 900 representatives from nonprofits across the state, to provide information on federal assistance available through the CARES Act. Nonprofits in New Jersey and across the country are facing particular challenges during this crisis as they are being called to serve more people with fewer resources.
- He continued to lead the effort in holding Amazon accountable for workplace safety in the age of Coronavirus, sending a second letter to CEO Jeff Bezos urging the company to do more to protect its front-line workers.
- He led more than 60 of his Democratic and Republican colleagues in Congress in calling on leading international health and wildlife organizations to place a permanent global ban on live wildlife markets, also known as “wet” markets, as well as the international trade of live wildlife. “Wet” markets create a breeding ground for infectious diseases and are suspected to be the source of COVID-19.
- Throughout the week, Senator Booker held conference calls with various groups, including: the South Jersey Food Bank, the New Jersey Coalition to End Domestic Violence, the New Jersey Education Association, the New Jersey Career Fire Chiefs Association, Students Demand Action, the New Jersey Black Multi-Faith Alliance, and Salvation and Social Justice.
