Speaker Coughlin Cites Wimberly’s Leadership in Appointing Him Chair of Key Committee

(TRENTON) – Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin has named Assemblyman Benjie Wimberly as the new Assembly Housing and Community Development Committee chairman.

Wimberly will oversee the key committee responsible for addressing statewide concerns including affordable housing, residential construction and various legislation improving New Jersey communities.

He will assume chairmanship of the housing panel, formerly led by Assemblyman Jerry Green, at the next committee meeting.

“Benjie is the absolute right choice to lead the Assembly Housing Committee,” said Coughlin. “We have seen his dedication to the critical issues affecting New Jersey’s most vulnerable communities through his ardent participation on the Assembly Budget Committee and in the past on the Assembly Judiciary Committee. Assemblyman Wimberly will provide fresh leadership and mixture of compassion and diligence to the work of the committee in the way Jerry would have been proud.”

Wimberly has served in the Assembly since 2012, representing the 35th Legislative District. The Paterson resident is the Recreation Coordinator for the City of Paterson and Paterson Public Schools.

“It is an honor to serve as chair of the Assembly Housing Committee,” said Wimberly (D-Bergen, Passaic).  “I look forward to tackling the many housing concerns affecting New Jersey residents throughout the state. There are many other issues that need to be raised and discussed alongside affordable housing requirements that are especially important to communities like Paterson, such as the plethora of homes and buildings left abandoned without upkeep.”

Wimberly is also Vice-Chair of the Assembly Telecommunications committee and a member of the Assembly Budget Committee.  He is also a member of the Joint Committee on Economic Justice and Equal Employment Opportunity as well as a member of the Joint Committee on the Public Schools.

He represents the 35d Legislative District which covers Elmwood Park Borough, City of Garfield, Haledon Borough, North Haledon Borough, City of Paterson and Prospect Park Borough.
