Councilman Cohen Decries Antisemitism Expressed at Hoboken Council Meeting
Councilman Phil Cohen today highlighted his response to the antisemitic comments expressed at the Hoboken Council meeting last night by a member of the public who said in comments regarding the Council’s vote approving the appointment of an Asian American Municipal Judge, “it is about as diverse as all the people that have been plucked out of synagogues and all the synagogues that run the city of Hoboken.”
“Sadly tonight antisemitic sentiments were expressed in the public room, said Phil Cohen responding at the Council meeting. “There is no place in our community for antisemitism. It does not belong in Hoboken.” (Attached is a video with his entire remarks).
Antisemitic incidents in the United States are on rise with an all-time high number of 3,697 reported in 2022—an 36% increase over the previous year, according to the ADL.
Phil Cohen said, “It is important that we speak up whenever antisemitism or other forms of bigotry and hatred surface in our community. As a Councilman, that is what I’ve done and that is what I will continue to do.”
Mr. Cohen noted that he appreciated the support for his remarks he received from his fellow council members at the meeting.
