COUNCILMAN PETER YACOBELLIS RELEASES FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS GUIDE TO NEWLY PROPOSED RENT CONTROL LAW FOR MONTCLAIR

(MONTCLAIR, NJ) – Today, Montclair Councilman Peter Yacobellis released a Frequently Asked Questions Guide for the newly proposed rent control law that he dubs “Rent Control 2.0”. The guide anticipates and then answers questions about the new 24-page law that the Montclair Township Council will begin formal consideration of at its Monday, May 28th special session.

“This is an incredibly consequential law that we’ve spent months debating and then forming the components of. Given its sweeping impact on the lives of most tenants in Montclair and many landlords, I wanted to take the time to simplify and explain some of the basics.”, said Councilman Peter Yacobellis. “Too often we make laws and don’t take the time to properly communicate the why, what, and how to folks. I hope this helps.”, he added.

The Frequently Asked Questions are attached and can also be found, along with a copy of the 24 page rent control law on Yacobellis’ website here.

Yacobellis also invites citizens with questions to email him at pyacobellis@montclairnjusa.org

“There is a lot of work to be done first to pass and then implement this law. Once we appoint a Rent Control Board and the Township Manager hires a Rent Control Officer, I anticipate the work related to information for the public, to be taken on by them.”, said Yacobellis

In 2014 Yacobellis was appointed by then-Governor Andrew Cuomo to run the New York office of Rent Administration for the New York State Department of Housing and Community Renewal where he performed a similar role to that of a rent control officer, but for the entire borough of Manhattan. “From being a rent stabilization/control official for New York State, I’m keenly aware of the kinds of things landlords and tenants come to a rent control official for help on and how to adjudicate many of those matters, as I was charged to do. With the anticipated enactment of this new rent control law and the subsequent creation of similar functions of our local government, I look forward to helping any way I can.”, said Yacobellis
