County College of Morris Legacy Project Announces its Spring Semester Series on “War, Peace & Healing”

RANDOLPH, NJ – The Legacy Project at County College of Morris (CCM) continues its yearlong programming on “War, Peace & Healing” with the announcement of its Spring Semester schedule. The series includes lectures, panel discussions, recordings, film and book discussions.  All events are free and open to the public. A film screening of the acclaimed documentary, “Hell and Back Again” will be shown of February 25, 3:30 – 5 p.m. in the Learning Resource Center (LRC), Room 216 on the CCM campus, 214 Center Grove Road in Randolph.  In 2009, the Marines launched a major helicopter assault on a Taliban stronghold in Afghan­istan. Photojournalist Danfung Dennis was there for the attack who also traveled alongside Sgt. Nathan Harris as he returned home to North Carolina and adjusted to civilian life.

The Morris Museum’s Bickford Theater will show a film screening of “We Are Not Done Yet” followed by a conversation with poet Seema Reza on Tuesday, March 24, 7:30 – 9 p.m. The HBO documentary is about veterans combatting past trauma through the written word.  One of the film’s subjects, poet Seem Reza will answer questions after the event.  CCM Professor Dee McAree will moderate the question and answer session.

A lecture on “Surviving Genocide” will be given at the Morris Museum on Wednesday, April 1, 7:30 – 9 p.m.  Eugenie Mukeshimana will focus on her experience of being eight months pregnant when genocide broke out in her home country of Rwanda.  Since this harrowing experience, she has lived a life to bring peace and healing to fellow survivors of genocide.  The Morris Museum is located at 6 Normandy Heights Road in Morristown.

On Thursday, April 23, a book discussion on “Shooting Ghosts” by Thomas J. Brennan (USMC, Retired) will be held in the CCM LRC Starbucks Café from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. CCM Professor Laura Driver will give an insightful lecture titled “War, Peace and Memoir” at the Butler Library on Wednesday, April 29, 6:30 p.m. The Butler Library is located at 1 Ace Road in Butler.

Join war photographer Finbarr O’Reilly for an engaging lecture “A U.S. Marine, a Combat Photographer, and Their Journey Back From War” on Thursday, April 30, 12:30 p.m. on the CCM campus in Sheffield Hall, Room 100.  Throughout May, stories of CCM veterans will be recorded as part of the Legacy Poject’s Oral History Remembrance Month.

This year of programming was made possible by a grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Over its seven years of existence, the Legacy Project at CCM has presented lectures and programming on a variety of important issues that impact the lives of students, faculty, staff, community members in Morris County and others. The Legacy Project is led by a team of professors and staff members at CCM.
